What hiring a CDL driver actually costs.

Most fleet owners know hiring hurts. Few have seen the numbers laid end to end. Here is the full bill, with sources, and where each dollar actually goes.

INDUSTRY FIGURES, SOURCED // NO EMAIL GATE
The Bill

Four numbers every owner should know.

$8,500 per hire

The vendor-published industry average for a do-it-yourself CDL hire: job board spend, recruiter hours, screening, drug test, orientation, and the seats that fall through before one sticks. Small fleets often pay more per hire than large ones, because the fixed costs do not shrink.

45+ days per seat

Average time-to-fill hiring in-house. A revenue truck parked those 45 days loses its weekly gross the entire time: at $4,000 a week, that is roughly $26,000 in freight before the seat is even filled. Our calculator on the homepage runs your exact number.

1-2% of applications hire

DIY fleets convert 1-2% of raw applications into seated drivers; specialized screening pipelines report 3-7%. The gap is not luck. It is speed to first contact, hard disqualifiers applied early, and callbacks that actually happen.

$6,000-12,000 per quit

What walks out the door with every driver who leaves: recruiting cost, orientation, the empty-seat bleed while you re-hire. At 90%+ annual turnover, common at large truckload fleets, hiring badly twice costs more than hiring right once.

All four are directional industry figures, vendor-published, not our measurements. We would rather show you the real number for your region: that is what the free region report is for.

Where It Leaks

The three leaks that cause the $8,500.

LEAK 01

Speed

Drivers apply to 5-10 carriers from their phone in one sitting. The first callback usually wins. If your callback happens tomorrow, you paid to generate a lead for whoever called today. Our engine calls within about two minutes.

LEAK 02

Ghosting

No-shows at phone screens and orientation are where hiring budgets die quietly. A recorded voice screen minutes after application catches interest at its peak and filters the drivers who never intended to show.

LEAK 03

Junk applications

Fake experience, hidden violations, no actual CDL-A. Every junk application your team phone-screens costs recruiter time. Hard disqualifiers in a DOT-style application catch them before a human spends a minute.
